Pinetop Perkins

I forgot to mention that I was going to be out of town all last week, so no blog post for last Wednesday's jam. I was in Austin TX at a conference during the day, and out playing music in the bars on 6th Street at night.

Last Tuesday a friend & I went out in the evening looking for a place to play. We stumbled into a bar called Nuno's around 10:00pm, just as they were changing out bands. We talked with Rusty Trapps, leader of the Blue Lights, the band just coming on. He told us to stick around & he'd invite us up during the second set.

So, we were just hanging out, enjoying the music -- the Blue Lights are very good. Half way through the first set a 95 year old man got up from his table and started to leave the bar. He walked slowly, using a cane. Rusty shouted out, "Hey Pinetop, want to sit in?" So Pinetop hobbled over to the keyboard, and sat down. I swear that as soon as his fingers touched the keyboard 60 years dropped off his age. He did a few numbers and then toddled off stage, saying he needed to go to bed.

What a treat. For those of you who don't know, Pinetop is one of our living Blues legends. He's played with just about everybody who counts, including Muddy Waters (12 years holding down the piano chair for Muddy Waters), Buddy Guy, you name it. I didn't have my camera or recorder, but here's a recent video of Pinetop sitting in with James Cotton.
